Beschreibung:Charles Maturin’s Melmoth the Wanderer is a classic example of a Gothic Novel. We are going to analyse structure, points of view and the use of certain motifs, such as fear, love, light and darkness, good and evil. Participants will be required to deliver an oral presentation and write a term paper based on this presentation.
WARNING: As this novel contains all kinds of horror and mental anguish, participants should be mentally and emotionally stable.
We shall use the following edition:
Charles Maturin, Melmoth the Wanderer (Penguin English Library), ISBN 978.0241366547
Copies will be made available at zur Heide bookshop. Please do not acquire any other edition.
Please register for the course in person (preferably after making an appointment by e-mail), StudIP registration is not sufficient. And please make sure you have read the book by the beginning of term (There will be short test on plot and characters).
